Viking River Cruises vs. AmaWaterways (and the Lines You Haven’t Heard Of Yet): A Real Talk Guide

April 23, 2026

You’ve seen the Viking commercials. You know the ones. The longships gliding past medieval castles, the PBS-narrator voice, the dreamy European scenery. And you think, okay, Viking it is.

Not so fast, friend.

As your travel bestie who lives and breathes river cruising, I need to have a little chat with you before you hand over your credit card. Because Viking is not the only option. And honestly? It might not even be the best one for you.

Let’s break it all down.

First, What Even IS a River Cruise?

Before we get into the comparison, let’s make sure we’re on the same page.

A river cruise is NOT your typical cruise ship experience. No 5,000 passengers. No waterslides. No losing your people in a floating mall. River cruise ships are small and intimate, under 200 guests, and they sail directly into the heart of the most stunning cities in Europe and beyond. You wake up docked right in the middle of Bruges, Budapest, Vienna, or Amsterdam. No tendering. No shuttles. Just walk right off the ship and you’re already THERE.

It’s basically a floating boutique hotel that unpacks itself for you.

Okay, So Why Does Everyone Think of Viking First?

Simple. Money. Lots and lots of advertising money.

Viking’s founder and CEO Torstein Hagen has spent approximately $4 billion on marketing and advertising since the company launched in 1997. That’s not a typo. $4 billion, actually it may even be $5 billion by the time you read this! You’ve seen their commercials on PBS, in your mailbox, basically everywhere you look. And that’s entirely by design. They’re more of a great marketing company, rather than a great river cruise company.

The Real Talk on Viking: What the Commercials Don’t Tell You

The demographic skews older. Much older.

Viking specifically targets English-speaking travelers over 55. That is their stated focus. If you’re in your late 20s to early 40s and looking for a vibrant, active experience, the vibe onboard may feel a little more retirement party than the European adventure you had in mind.

Only one included excursion per port, and it’s pretty basic.

Viking includes one excursion at each port stop. Sounds great, right? Here’s the catch: Viking chooses that excursion for you, and it’s typically a basic walking or driving tour. You’re loaded onto a giant motorcoach, wearing a bright red lanyard, following a guide holding a sign, shuffling through the city in a slow-moving crowd. There’s very little flexibility, very little personalization, and very little room to linger somewhere you actually love.

The ships are designed to fit more passengers, not more space.

Cabins on Viking ships run on the smaller side. Reviewers consistently flag limited lounge seating relative to the number of passengers onboard, and soundproofing between cabins and public spaces gets called out regularly in reviews.

Pricing can be a surprise in the wrong way.

There have been reports from travelers who locked in a price, went back hours later to complete payment, and found the price had jumped by thousands of dollars with no recourse. That kind of experience is exactly why working with a travel advisor matters. Someone is in your corner.

Their business model tells you everything.

When a CEO publicly prioritizes cutting out travel advisors to improve profit margins, it says a lot about how the company values the client experience versus the bottom line. A cruise line that partners deeply with knowledgeable advisors is a cruise line that cares about matching you to the RIGHT experience. Viking has been very transparent that this is not their priority.

Viking and wellness:

Unlike most river cruise lines, Viking does not offer bicycles onboard for guest use. Pools are rare across the fleet, available on only two ships, both sailing the Douro River. Fitness facilities are limited or nonexistent on most Viking river ships, while competitors like AmaWaterways, Riverside, Scenic, Emerald, and others, include bikes, pools, fitness centers, and active excursion options as standard.

So Who SHOULD You Be Looking At?

The river cruise world is absolutely FULL of incredible lines that don’t get the billion-dollar ad budgets but absolutely deserve your attention. Here’s your real talk cheat sheet.

As someone who has attended the River Cruise Expo and was able to tour 16 cruise ships along 10 different cruise brands, I can say that there are so many great river cruise lines out there and more are coming out each year!

⭐ AmaWaterways: The One I Personally Recommend

AmaWaterways is my go-to recommendation, and I am proud to be an Ama partner because I genuinely believe in what they offer. I have attended River Cruise Expo and sailed with them personally, so this is not just book knowledge. This is real, firsthand experience.

Founded in 2002, AmaWaterways is a family-owned company. And it FEELS like it. The warmth, the attention to detail, the “we actually care about your experience” energy is palpable from the moment you step onboard.

Here’s what sets Ama apart.

Multiple excursions per port, all included.

While Viking offers one basic group tour per stop, AmaWaterways typically offers three to four excursion options per port, all included in your fare. A gentle walking tour. A cycling excursion through the countryside. A culinary-focused experience. A hiking option. You choose what fits YOUR travel style that day. And because the groups are smaller and the options are plentiful, you are never shuffling through a port in a massive crowd.

The ships are gorgeous and varied.

Ama’s ships feature twin balconies in many staterooms (yes, a balcony on BOTH sides of the room), stunning dining spaces, a wellness focus, and thoughtful details everywhere you look. Their flagship AmaMagna is a double-width ship, which is a truly one-of-a-kind experience on the river.

Food is a highlight, not an afterthought.

AmaWaterways takes culinary experiences seriously. Regional cuisine, specialty dining, wine pairings, it’s all woven into the journey in a way that feels intentional and celebratory.

They partner with travel advisors because they actually want you matched correctly.

This matters more than people realize. AmaWaterways believes the best client experience starts with the right advisor guiding you to the right ship and itinerary. That philosophy shows up in every detail of how they operate.

Uniworld: The Boutique Luxury Option

If you want pure luxury that feels more like a floating five-star hotel than anything resembling a traditional cruise, Uniworld is your line. Think curated art collections, hand-painted details, one-of-a-kind ship designs, and an ultra-inclusive experience. No two Uniworld ships look alike. Every single one is distinctive, opulent, and full of personality. If the words boutique, bespoke, and opulence make your heart flutter, Uniworld is calling your name. And not to mention, all Butler suites! True luxury and yes, it makes my heart flutter, big time!

Avalon Waterways: Best for the View Obsessed

Avalon’s claim to fame is their Suite Ships, featuring floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall open-air panoramic windows in the staterooms. Your entire wall is essentially a window. The beds face the view. You wake up and the river is right there. If you’re the kind of woman who would happily spend a morning watching Europe float by with a latte in hand, Avalon was basically designed for you.

And as someone who has personally stayed in the Panorama Suites, the rooms are so spacious and the view is incredible!

Scenic: Ultra-Luxury All-Inclusive Done Right

Scenic takes the all-inclusive concept seriously. We are talking butler service, included shore excursions, all beverages (yes, the good stuff), specialty dining, gratuities, and even included flights on some itineraries. If you want to think about absolutely nothing except enjoying yourself, Scenic delivers a truly all-in experience where the word “extra” barely exists.

Emerald Cruises: Sleek, Modern, and Value-Forward

Emerald is the sister brand to Scenic but at a more accessible price point, without sacrificing the sleek, modern experience. Perfect for the first-time river cruiser who wants a premium feel without going full ultra-luxury right out of the gate. Their ships are gorgeous, their excursions are included, and the overall vibe is fresh and contemporary.

Fun fact: Emerald ships have also starred in several Hallmark movies lately, so if you’ve spotted a dreamy European river ship on your couch on a Saturday night, chances are it was one of theirs. 🎬

Riverside Luxury Cruises: The New Kid With Big Energy

Riverside is newer to the scene but making serious waves (pun absolutely intended 😄). Beautiful ships, an emphasis on personalized service, the largest spa and gym of any river cruise ship on the water, and a fresh approach to river cruising that’s attracting a younger, more style-conscious traveler. One to absolutely watch. They are even offering shorter itineraries which not too many are jumping on that bandwagon. And can we say, all butler suites!

Celebrity River Cruises: The Familiar Name in a Brand New World

Already a Celebrity Cruises loyalist and been river-curious for a while? Celebrity made it easy by launching their very own river cruise line. You get that signature Celebrity polish, the elevated dining, the sophisticated vibe, now flowing through the rivers of Europe.

It is a perfect bridge for the ocean cruiser who keeps thinking “but what IS river cruising even like?”

So How Do You Actually Choose?

Here’s the honest answer: it depends entirely on YOU.

And that is exactly why working with a travel advisor who specializes in river cruising is so valuable. The right river cruise line for you depends on your travel style, your budget, how active you want to be, the kind of excursions that light you up, and the onboard vibe that feels like your people.

The wrong river cruise line, booked based on name recognition alone because you’ve seen 10,000 commercials? That can mean an experience that just doesn’t fit who you are.

That is what I’m here for. I attended River Cruise Expo and personally toured 16 ships from 10 different brands. I know these ships. I know these lines. I know the questions to ask to figure out which one is YOUR perfect match.
