Why Tahiti Is Better on a Small Ship Cruise

May 20, 2026

The Relaxed, Immersive Way to Experience French Polynesia

If Tahiti and Bora Bora have been sitting on your bucket list for years, you’re definitely not alone.

French Polynesia is one of those dream destinations people imagine for honeymoons, anniversaries, milestone birthdays, and once-in-a-lifetime vacations. But what many travelers don’t realize is this:

The way you experience Tahiti matters just as much as the destination itself.

After personally sailing French Polynesia on a small ship cruise with Windstar Cruises a couple of years ago, I honestly can’t imagine doing Tahiti any other way.

In fact, I even hosted a small group on this sailing, and it quickly became one of the most unforgettable travel experiences I’ve ever shared with clients. (hint…this is a perfect way for you to host a group onboard!)

And once you understand how these islands are laid out, it makes perfect sense why small ship cruising has become one of the best ways to experience this part of the world.

Tahiti Is Not Just One Island

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is thinking Tahiti is a single destination.

In reality, French Polynesia is made up of more than 100 islands spread across a massive area of the South Pacific.

Places like:

  • Bora Bora
  • Moorea
  • Raiatea
  • Huahine
  • Taha’a

…all have their own personalities, landscapes, and experiences.

Trying to visit multiple islands on your own means coordinating:

  • flights
  • ferries
  • hotel transfers
  • luggage
  • and inter-island logistics

And honestly? That can become exhausting quickly.

That’s one of the biggest reasons small ship cruising works so well here.

Tahiti Is Much More Untouched Than Most People Expect

One thing that surprises many travelers about Tahiti and French Polynesia is how untouched the islands still feel.

Outside of Papeete, which is the main city and transportation hub in Tahiti, there really are not large cities, major shopping districts, endless restaurants, or busy nightlife scenes.

In fact, many of the islands feel incredibly quiet and relaxed.

Even places like Bora Bora, which is famous for its luxury overwater bungalow resorts, still feel surprisingly untouched. Most of the resorts are tucked away out of sight on private motus (small islands), so you don’t see rows of large hotels lining the shoreline.

And when you arrive in many of the small island towns, you’ll quickly notice:

  • a few local shops
  • maybe a church
  • a small market
  • and not much else

Even many cruise stops require tender boats because there aren’t large cruise ports or major tourism infrastructure throughout the islands.

And honestly?
That’s part of what makes Tahiti so special.

This is not the destination for travelers looking for:

  • big nightlife scenes
  • endless shopping
  • packed schedules
  • or nonstop entertainment

Tahiti is about:

  • slowing down
  • disconnecting
  • being surrounded by the bluest water you’ve ever seen
  • and enjoying the natural beauty of the islands themselves

Even as someone who is not particularly into water sports, I was completely blown away by how beautiful the water was. Photos truly do not prepare you for those shades of blue. The picture below just doesn’t do it justice, but there were so many different shades of blue. Just gorgeous!

And after a day exploring the islands, there was nothing better than coming back onboard Windstar’s beautiful small ship, relaxing on deck, and simply taking it all in.

That slower pace is exactly why so many travelers fall in love with French Polynesia.

This is yet another reason I think the small ship cruising is so much better for my couples than just visiting an island or two.

Tahiti Feels Very Different From Most Tourist Destinations

Another thing many travelers don’t realize before visiting Tahiti is that French and Tahitian (locally called Reo Tahiti) are the primary languages spoken throughout the islands.

While you’ll absolutely find English spoken in resorts, tourism areas, and onboard cruise ships, there were definitely moments where communication could be a little challenging, especially in smaller local areas and villages. I even had a hard time communicating in the large city of Papeete.

And honestly? That’s part of what makes French Polynesia feel so untouched and authentic.

This is not a destination that feels overly commercialized or built entirely around tourism. In many places, local life still feels very local, which gives the islands a much more genuine and relaxed atmosphere compared to more heavily developed beach destinations.

Small Ship Cruises Make Tahiti Feel Effortless

On a small ship cruise, your accommodations travel with you.

You unpack once, settle in, and wake up in a completely different island paradise almost every day.

Instead of worrying about transportation between islands, everything flows seamlessly together.

For busy professionals especially, this removes one of the biggest pain points of bucket-list travel:

The planning.

And because small ships carry far fewer passengers, the experience feels dramatically more personal and relaxed than larger cruise ships. How about 300 people vs 7000? Quite a difference.

Why Windstar Cruises Is So Popular in Tahiti

Windstar Cruises has been sailing French Polynesia for decades and is considered one of the most established small ship cruise lines in the region. They have been sailing to Tahiti for 36 years! You can say they KNOW these islands very well.

Their smaller ships create a much more immersive experience in Tahiti compared to larger cruise ships.

One of the things I loved most was how connected the experience felt to the islands themselves.

At one point during our sailing, we watched a local Tahitian dance group perform on Windstar’s private motu island. What made it even more special was learning that many of the performers had been dancing for Windstar since they were children.

That kind of relationship with the local culture is hard to replicate.

It didn’t feel touristy.
It felt personal.

And honestly, that’s the magic of small ship cruising in Tahiti.

Bora Bora Feels Different on a Small Ship

Most people immediately think of overwater bungalows when they picture Bora Bora.

And yes… they really are as beautiful as they look online.

But one of the things that surprised me most was how incredible Bora Bora felt arriving by small ship.

Waking up and seeing Mount Otemanu rising out of the water from your balcony is something you truly never forget.

Because smaller ships can access areas and experiences that larger ships often cannot, the entire experience feels calmer, more intimate, and much more connected to the destination itself.

Yes, You Can Still Experience an Overwater Bungalow

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about cruising Tahiti is thinking they have to give up the iconic overwater bungalow experience.

The good news?
You absolutely don’t.

Many travelers choose to add an overwater bungalow stay either before or after their cruise, which honestly creates an incredible combination of relaxation and island exploration.

And on some Tahiti itineraries with Windstar Cruises, there are overnight stays in Bora Bora, giving travelers more time to experience the island instead of only visiting for a few hours.

That means you can enjoy:

  • the ease of small ship cruising between islands
  • multiple destinations throughout French Polynesia
  • AND still experience the bucket-list magic of Bora Bora’s famous overwater bungalows

For many travelers, it ends up being the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.

Why I Personally Think Cruising Tahiti Is Better

As beautiful as the overwater bungalow resorts are, one of the reasons I personally loved cruising Tahiti so much more was because I got to experience multiple islands instead of staying in just one place.

And honestly, once you’re actually there, you quickly realize how quiet and untouched many of the islands really are.

If your dream vacation is:

  • unplugging completely
  • relaxing in an overwater bungalow
  • enjoying spa treatments
  • reading by the water
  • and doing absolutely nothing

…then a resort stay can be absolutely perfect, and I can definitely help plan that experience too.

But for travelers who want to:

  • experience several islands
  • see different landscapes and lagoons
  • enjoy multiple cultures and excursions
  • and still relax without constantly repacking

…I truly think a small ship cruise is one of the best ways to experience French Polynesia.

You get the beauty and relaxation people dream about in Tahiti…
while also experiencing much more of what makes these islands so special.

And at the end of the day, there was something incredibly peaceful about coming back onboard Windstar after exploring all day, sitting on deck, and watching those unreal shades of blue drift by.

Did I mention that with Windstar, the crew knows you by your name? Probably my favorite part about this cruise line is the extraordinary crew and how welcome they make you feel.

That slower pace is hard to describe until you experience it yourself.

Small Ship Cruising Is Perfect for Busy Professionals

Most of my clients are busy professionals who want amazing experiences but don’t necessarily want complicated travel.

That’s why Tahiti small ship cruises work so well.

You still get:

  • beautiful resorts and beaches
  • incredible scenery
  • cultural immersion
  • amazing food
  • luxury experiences

…but without the stress of coordinating every moving piece yourself.

For many travelers, it becomes the perfect balance of:

  • adventure
  • relaxation
  • and ease

Tahiti Is Also Perfect for Romance Travel

It’s easy to see why Tahiti is so popular for:

  • honeymoons
  • anniversaries
  • vow renewals
  • milestone celebrations

But honestly, small ship cruising makes it even more romantic.

The atmosphere feels:

  • intimate
  • relaxed
  • uncrowded
  • and incredibly scenic

It feels less like checking destinations off a list…
…and more like actually experiencing them together.

Not Sure If You’d Prefer a Small Ship or Bigger Cruise Experience?

One of the questions I get asked all the time is:

“Would I enjoy a small ship cruise more than a traditional larger cruise ship?”

That’s exactly why I created this free guide:

Small Ship vs Big Ship Cruise Guide

Inside, I break down:

  • the biggest differences between the experiences
  • who tends to enjoy each style more
  • and why so many travelers are moving toward smaller, more immersive cruise experiences

If you’ve been curious about small ship cruising, it’s a great place to start.

Final Thoughts: Tahiti Feels Better Slower

One of the biggest travel trends right now is travelers wanting experiences that feel:

  • more immersive
  • less rushed
  • and easier to enjoy

Tahiti is one of those destinations that truly benefits from slowing down.

And in my opinion, there’s no better way to do that than on a small ship cruise.

For travelers who want:

  • bucket-list beauty
  • less stress
  • easier island hopping
  • and a more personal experience

…small ship cruising in French Polynesia is hard to beat.
